Introducing Two New Trainee Awards for 2021

The Biophysical Society of Canada is proud to announce two new trainee awards for 2021: the Doctoral Thesis Award (DTA) and the Trainee Paper Award (TPA).

If you are currently a member of the BSC and would like to nominate a worthy candidate for either of these awards, please view our eligibility and nomination guidelines on our website.

Here are some brief overviews of these new awards. The deadline for both is February 28th, 2021.

Doctoral Thesis Award (DTA):

The BSC recognizes the achievements of doctoral trainees in biophysics through the Doctoral Thesis Award (DTA). Recipients are recent graduates of Ph.D. programs at a Canadian University, who defended a doctoral thesis of an exceptional quality and impact in any field of biophysics within one year from the nomination date.

To be eligible, the nominee must have defended their PhD within the calendar year (Jan. 01 – Dec. 31) preceding the nomination. The PhD thesis must have a clear biophysical focus, and the nominee must have obtained their PhD degree from a doctoral program at a Canadian university.

The DTA winners are recognized at the Annual meeting of the Biophysical Society of Canada and are given a prize of $500. One award per year is offered.

Trainee Paper Award (TPA):

The BSC recognizes the achievements of undergraduate, graduate, and postdoctoral trainees in biophysics through the Trainee Paper Award (TPA). Recipients are current or recent undergraduate or graduate students, or postdoctoral fellows at a Canadian University, who are leading authors on a research paper of an exceptional quality, originality, and impact in any subfield of biophysics.

To be eligible, the nominee must be a current or recent (within one year from finishing their term at the time of the nomination) undergraduate, graduate, or postdoctoral trainee at a Canadian university, in any subfield of biophysics. The nominee has to play a leading role in the nominated paper, and the paper should be published or in press (DOI required) within the calendar year (Jan. 01 – Dec. 31) preceding the nomination.

The TPA winners will be recognized at the Annual meeting of the Biophysical Society of Canada and are given a prize of $300. Up to two awards per year will be offered.
