The research of Biophysical Society of Canada member, Maikel Rheinstädter, and his undergraduate student, Andree Khondker – a recent BSC travel award winner to the 2018 Biophysical Society meeting in San Francisco where he won a student research achievement award – was recently highlighted in the Hamilton Spectator. This dynamic team of researchers has discovered a new way that bacteria fight off antibiotics, by stiffening their cell membranes and changing the membrane’s electric charge to prevent the attraction of oppositely charged antibiotics.
